What You Should Consider in Selecting a Hive

Make sure it has strong, durable parts that can provide adequate protection for your bees and last for years.

The design should have a proper temperature regulation system and allow aeration.

You should be able to assemble the parts quickly for easy transportation and movement.

Choose one that allows you to use standard accessories with it.

It should make harvesting honey easy for you and it disturbs the bees in the least possible way.

Go for a product within your budget. More expensive does not necessarily mean better quality.

Hive Frames

Frames are rectangular and hang inside the hive as drawers in a cabinet would. After moving your bees into the hive, they will build their combs in the frames and perform most of their activities there. They will lay brood, make honey, and prepare for winter in frames by gathering all the necessary supplies they need. Without the frames, bees cannot hold their comb inside the hive. They are an integral part of your beekeeping system.

The type of hive you buy will determine if you can put extra frames or if the extra will be necessary at all. Stacked out frames are easier to handle when extracting honey, so you can replace the one you pulled out with a spare. This way your bees can keep working to store new honey into the hive and the cycle continues. You can usually get hive frames from the same place you got your hive, or you can make yours from wood.
